A craft reserved for the royalties to add bling and sparkle to their garment, Mukaish, has been in existence since the 3rd century. The craft of Mukaish is an embroidery craft where silver or gold-coloured threads are sewn in various Persian, floral, and geometric motifs to accentuate any fabric. It was mainly adorned by the Mughal royal households. They preferred their otherwise luxurious Chikankari daily outfits to be enhanced with a touch of sparkle for their grand evening affairs. Thus, the artisans used Mukaish, also referred to as Kaamdani or Takaayi, to enhance these attires.
At Jaypore, using this age-old craft technique to curate a collection of sarees has been enthralling, to say the least. Our Mukaish saree collection is crafted in the finest chiffon and cotton silk, offering a breezy and graceful touch for various occasions. Each saree is made in soft, vibrant colours that suit your style and taste.
The craft of Mukaish is believed to have originated in the 3rd century. It is a metal embroidery craft mainly done to accentuate any fabric. The artisans embellish small metallic dots, typical of the craft, onto a lightweight fabric, adding sparkle to it. The crafts' motifs and patterns are mainly inspired by Persian art and culture. However, with time, newer and more contemporary floral and geometric motifs have also been incorporated. What grabs the limelight is that it was the Mughals who were royal patronage of the craft. It was especially the famed Mughal Empress Nur Jahan who adorned it extensively and promoted it widely.
The craft is also known by various other names, such as Takaayi and Kaamdani. Many varieties of stitches are used to embellish the garments with various floral and geometric motifs. In those times, it was mainly done on Chikankari garments to fill the spaces in between and add bling fit for the evening royal affairs. Today, with contemporary modifications, it is done on various fabrics and can wholly consist of metal embroidery, adding richness to the attire.
