THE STORY
Starting with the warm colors of spring, evoking the gracefulness of a Persian garden and ending with a surprise twist of pumpkin orange, fuchsia and coral hues…the contrast of colors echoes the stories of the brave young women from the NGO, Kranti - stories of how they rose from impossible situations in Mumbai's red-light district to become agents of social change, stories of a new spring in their lives filled with hope. Wearing kurtas, pajamas and sarees re-interpreted by Shades of India at the Lakme Fashion Week 2017, they told their tales while demonstrating independence in their attire – can you hear them in these hues of white, orchid tint, almond and rose pink too?
The collection of separates by Shades of India has been modeled by young women from Kranti – a Mumbai-based NGO that endeavors to empower girls from Mumbai's red-light areas. These women are survivors of trafficking, daughters of sex workers or born and raised in Kamathipura, Asia's most infamous red-light area. Founded by Robin Chaurasia, ex-US Air Force, Kranti's girls have many firsts to their name including winning awards from the UN for their social justice work.
Shades of India, founded over two decades ago is an internationally-renowned design label. Led by Mandeep Nagi and David Housego, the brand combines contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship. Believing that every collection should tell a story, the label's Bagh Collection draws inspiration from Persian gardens, the city of Nawabs and the early days of spring that are reminiscent of hope.
