THE STORY
Mata Ni Pachedi is a kalamkari art form traditional to Gujarat. Presented here is a collection of collectable art painstakingly hand-painted by National Award winner Vasant Manubhai.

While extensively practiced in states of the south, like Andhra Pradesh, Kalamkari has a few hidden experts in Gujarat’s Vaghri Harijan community that practice it in their own unique way.

In olden times, the Harijan community, often labelled ‘untouchables’, did not have access to temples. Made on cotton or silk fabric, hand painted Pachedis worked as their own personal shrines that were used for worship of the Goddess.

A National Award winner for Kalamkari, Vasant Manubhai is among a handful of artists that still make hand painted Pachedis. Most that are available in the market are block printed and sell for a lot less.

Eco-friendly in nature, Mata ni Pachedi reinforces the use of non-polluting, wholesome materials which do not compromise in making outstanding aesthetic pieces.
