THE STORY
The thought-provoking Tree of Life motif, a visual narration of a scene from Guru Rabindranath Tagore’s poem, traditional village and jungle scenes and a surprising inclusion of modern life with a depiction of women working on a computer… hand-embroidered wall art made in the traditional kantha style by talented women artisans use the simple running stitch to create breathtaking visuals, worthy of a stylish home. Pick your favorites as stand-alone focus pieces or as part of a larger ensemble of textile art.

These wall hangings were hand embroidered by the women artisans at SHE (Self Help Enterprise), conceived by Shamlu Dudeja and run by her daughter Mallika. SHE was founded in 1985 with an aim to revive the centuries old Nakshi Kantha of Bengal, a languishing village craft losing an enormous battle against cheaper, printed fabrics.

The craft born of economy, the motifs borrowed from nature, the colors fired by imagination, the stitch a simple line going in and out of the fabric...kantha stuns with its simplicity and genius. A living, thriving craft, kantha finds a new platform and innovative motifs that step away from the traditional ones in this collection.
