THE STORY
Leheriya is one of the earliest known surface embellishment techniques found in India and other places in Asia since at least the 6th century AD. A precise, time-intensive technique, it involves rolling the fabric diagonally and tying with threads at different points to produce mesmerizing patterns like mothda, ekdali and shikari. Once upon a time, different styles and colors of the leheriya fabric were used as identity markers for merchants, traders, married women and young mothers among others. With accelerating automation and an eroding traditional market, leheriya artisans have been struggling to preserve the craft and ensure it lives on. However, updated applications of this age-old technique will go a long way in ensuring, leheriya's legacy is recognized and celebrated.
