Embellished Rama Darbar Oleograph - 19.5in x 16.5in x 1in
This vintage oleograph is from the 1920s and is embellished in zari and embroidery details.
These oleographs were commonly found in South Indian homes at the time and were embellished by the women of the household or sometimes even sent to Burma for embellishing. These were even used for worship.
Oleography was a technique used for large scale quality color printing. It is litho-printing (printing with stone) but with more color palettes, using large number of stones. Use of oil gave the prints more quality (oleo in latin means oil).
Since the prints are several decades old and have been subjected to the effects of nature, slight irregularities maybe present which only add to the charm. Prints of this quality in this condition makes them collectors pieces.
