Looking back at our diverse culture, we can undeniably say that sarees have been an integral part of it. The drapes of this garment can be traced to the ancient Indus Valley civilization in the northwest frontier of the country. Since then, it has been part of women's lives in celebrations and in their everyday elegance. What is fascinating about the sarees in India is the various drapes pertaining to its different regions. The country is a powerhouse of handicraft culture, and the sarees here are a work of art featuring beautiful colours and intricate motifs created using age-old craft techniques.
Curating a collection of green silk sarees has been the most exciting thing for Jaypore. Each saree is dotted with delicate patterns that make it a delight to drape them. The collection is made using the finest premium silk, which offers you a smooth and soft texture with a lightweight feel. Banarasi, Block-print, and Lehriya are just a few of the craft techniques that have been used to create these sarees.
The first instance we get of draping saree-like clothing is in the Indus Valley civilization, which lasted from around 2,800 to 1,800 B.C. The Indus Valley people were the first to cultivate cotton, which subsequently made them weavers. During that period, the weavers used natural colours derived from natural sources such as indigo plants, red madder, lac, turmeric, and more to dye the sarees. Thus producing vibrant colours. The garment is found in the ancient scriptures in Sanskrit and Pali. As centuries passed by, this garment evolved in style and structure and became a saree.
Jaypore's green silk sarees are made from the finest silks, offering the utmost comfort and style. The silk's sheen makes them ideal to adorn for various occasions. With the touch of India's crafts, they become masterpieces of heirlooms made to pass on to the next generation. Let us have a look at our collection:
Banarasi
From the ancient city of Varanasi comes the art of weaving the Banarasi sarees. The craft is known for its elaborate use of Zari and brocade work to make the motifs on the finest silk fabrics. It is believed that the craft started taking shape in and around the 14th century when weavers of the region started using silk in the brocade. The weavers use Zari, a metallic thread made from silver or gold. Thus making the saree rich in appeal. The combined use of Zari work and silk makes the sarees smooth and soft with an iridescent shine.
The most prominent motif that can be seen on a Banarasi saree is that of the Buttis, intertwining leaves traditionally known as Kalga and Bel. The Jhallar, is a typical traditional design that is used in the pallu of the saree. Apart from these designs, the geometric, Jal, and Meena work are also created. Today, it has evolved to become an essential item in the bridal trousseau. Our collection of Banarasi green sarees feature a fusion of contemporary and traditional design that are suitable to drape for any festive occasion.
Block Print
Block printing is one of the world's oldest craft techniques. It has been practised in the Indian subcontinent since the Indus Valley civilization. It is a relief printing technique that uses wooden blocks. The artisans first carve out the design on the wooden blocks. They then proceed to prepare the dyes, which are mostly made from natural substances. Once done, the wooden blocks are dipped into it and carefully placed onto the fabric. After applying pressure on them with hands, the imprints are left behind on the fabric.
While this craft may look simple, it requires years of work to develop the expertise in it. From carving the wooden blocks carefully to placing them precisely on the fabric to get the right design, it is a calculative and labour-intensive process. Our block-printed sarees are lightweight and are ideal for any casual day events or light occasions.
Embellished
Our embellished collection features a saree with gold embellishment on the border that offers a regal charm. This saree can be draped for any day or night gala.
Lehriya
The craft of Lehriya is closely associated with the culture of Rajasthan. The wave-like pattern that we see on the length of the saree resembles the ripples of sand dunes of the Thar desert. It is truly captivating to think of such simple natural phenomenon inspiring such mesmerizing craft techniques. These serpentine patterns are made using the tie-and-dye technique. The artisans sit through long hours tying the fabric and then dyeing them. From emerald green silk sarees to lighter tones, our Lehriya collection is suitable for various occasions.
Handwoven
The allure of a handwoven saree is timeless. The texture of a handcrafted and handwoven saree makes it a delight to drape them on various occasions. From bottle-green silk sarees to darker shades, our handwoven sarees are suitable for formal, casual, light or festive events.
Jaypore's green silk sarees are an ode to the artisans and their artistry. Using meticulous techniques, they weave magic into the craft that makes them a masterpiece. From the different shades of green to the intricate motifs, each saree is thoughtfully designed to make them heirlooms suitable for various occasions. So, why wait?
