The ancient city of Varanasi is the cradle of one of the world’s most luxurious crafts, Banarasi. Known for its exquisite weaving technique, the craft uses Zari, a metallic thread traditionally made from gold or silver, to weave sarees. What makes these sarees recognizable is their sheer luster and elaborate Zari motifs. It has awed emperors, kings, and noble persons alike since the 14th century. While there were mentions of a similar kind of fabric being draped by people in ancient India, it was during the Mughal period when the craft took its shape and was widely promoted by the Mughals.
Curating a collection of blue Banarasi sarees for Jaypore has been an exciting journey. Along with the Banarasi’s traditional motifs of Butti, Kalga, Bel, Jhallar, etc., we have also seamlessly integrated contemporary aesthetics, offering a statement of appeal.
The craft of Banarasi started taking shape after weavers in the city of Varanasi weaved silk brocades using Zari of gold and silver using advanced weaving techniques. The weaving technique produces elaborate rich and luxurious brocade work that is smooth and soft to the touch and produces elaborate brocade work. Varanasi, being a confluence of different cultures and faiths, the weavers of the city were influenced by the Mughal art and architecture. This influence was translated onto the various motifs and patterns they were weaving.
The Mughals were most famously known to appreciate luxurious crafts, fabrics, and clothes. Given Banarasi’s appeal, it instantly caught the attention of the Mughal royals. They became its royal patronage wearing Banarasi fabrics for various royal duties. With this, what the Mughals did was, they made the Banarasi known in various corners of the world. And with that, the Varanasi city became a hub for the Banarasi craft.
The motifs that the weavers make on the fabric are Butti, Kalga, Bel, Jhallar, Jal, and many other such geometric designs. The complex weaving technique makes the weavers sit for long hours. It can take them anywhere between ten days to six months to weave one saree. Such is the precision and labor required for the craft.
