Labour-intensive would still be an understatement to describe it.
Ajrakh is a traditional block-printing technique that uses the resist-dye method to make prints. The artisans use natural dyes and pigments and mordant to make imprints of floral, leaf, and geometric motifs. One of the key identifying factors, apart from the technique, is its extensive use of indigo. The fabric goes through multiple dyeing, block-printing, washing, and drying stages before it is ready to use.

The Intricate Process of Ajrakh
Creating Ajrakh print involves between sixteen to twenty-three processes. Since ancient times, craftsmen have used natural pigments and dyes to make prints. The craft uses a resist-dye method to make these impressions. Let's take a look at the detailed process of Ajrakh:
- The very first step in the process involves removing the starch from the fabric. For this, the fabric is first dug into a solution of camel dung, castor oil, and soda ash. Once the fabric is dipped into the solution, it is half-dried and dipped again. The process is repeated twice and finally washed thoroughly. This process is called Saaj in local terms.
- In the next step, also called Kassano, the fabric is washed using the myrobalan solution. This acts as the first mordant in the process of dying. The fabric is then sun-dried entirely.
- In the following step, Khariyanu, the fabric is printed using Arabic gum and lime. This helps in outlining the motifs and is called Rekh. The paste is applied to both sides of the fabrics.
- In the next step, the iron and jaggery are mixed well with water and left for twenty days to make the solution ferrous. It is then mixed with tamarind seed powder and boiled to get a paste. Again, this paste is applied to both sides of the fabric.
- In the next step, a paste of Arabic gum, clay, and alum is applied. Simultaneously, a resist paste of Arabic gum and lime is also applied. On top of this, a layer of sawdust is applied to prevent it from smudging. It is then left for up to ten days to dry.
- Once the fabric is completely dried, the fabric is dipped in indigo twice.
- Following indigo dying, the cloth is washed thoroughly with clean water to remove any resistant and residual dyes.
- Once done, the fabric is dried with Alzarin, a type of madder that imparts a red colour to the alum-resist areas. The fabric is then boiled with other dyes to impart the required colours.
- Finally, after several rounds of dyeing, the final product is revealed.
The Ajrakh process can take up to two weeks to complete. It is fascinating that the craft survived several thousands of years because of the relentless efforts of the artisans.
