Choosing a ceramic vase that complements your taste in home decor can often end up being daunting and confusing. However, you do not need to get through such an experience if you keep a few things in mind before making the final decision. Let us look deeper into it:
The process of making ceramics is long and labour-intensive. The artisans sit through painstaking hours, making each vase with their hands. It includes several steps before the final product is ready to be used. Let us dive deeper into it to understand the process in detail:
Preparing the Clay
The first step to making ceramic objects is to source and prepare the clay. The artisans source them from various clay mines. Once it is procured, it is then sorted and impurities such as rocks, twigs, stones, etc. Are removed. It is then cleaned again to remove any remaining fine particles. In the following process, the clay is mixed with other materials like feldspar, quartz, kaolin, and more to improve its various qualities like plasticity, etc.
Clay Molding
This step is required for bigger objects like pots and vases. A mould of plaster is created in the desired shape. The clay is then mixed with a solution to make a smooth liquid solution with no lumps. It is then poured inside the plaster mould and gently rotated to evenly coat the inside of it. Any excess clay solution is poured out and left to dry and hardened. Once done, it is then taken out of the mould and kept at room temperature for a day.
Another process the artisans often use is the traditional method of using a potter’s wheel to make the vases. In this, the clay mound is placed on the potter’s wheel, which is then rotated. Once in rotating motion, the artisans start shaping the clay into the desired shape. Once the shape is achieved, it is then cut and left to dry completely. This process needs more skills and experience.
Smoothening & Painting
The dried vases are then smoothed out of their rough edges with sandpaper. Any cracks that might have opened up are closed using clay and smoothed again. They are then dried and painted or ornamented for decorative purposes.
First Firing Process
The dried objects are then first fired at lower temperatures. This makes it hard and is a crucial step in eliminating any moisture left. It sets the shape of the clay as well.
Glazing
Once the objects are fired at low temperatures, a glaze solution is applied. A glaze is a solution typically made from minerals and pigments. It is applied as a protective layer that further enhances the look of the object as well.
Final Firing
Once the glaze is applied, it is then fired at high temperatures. This fuses the clay particles, forming a hardened ceramic structure that is also non-porous. It also lends the objects a glassy finish that ceramics are known for.
Final Touches
Finally, the ceramics are checked one last time for any faults before they are ready to be used.
