Choosing a ceramic plate is not a cumbersome task. You just need a few things to keep in mind when choosing a serving ware that can make your dining room warm and inviting. Let us dive deeper into some points to help you with:
The process of making ceramic plates is long and arduous. The artisans have to sit through long hours in their workshops or studios to make each batch of plates. Each plate is handcrafted from the beginning and then hand-painted and glazed to add the final touch of color.
Let us dive deeper into the process of ceramic plate making:
Preparation of Raw Materials
The very first step in the process is getting the raw materials, which essentially includes sourcing clay from various clay mines. Once it is procured, the clay is thoroughly sorted, and impurities such as rocks, twigs, leaves, or any other particles are removed from it. In the next step, the clay is cleaned of any further remaining foreign particles to make it consistent throughout. The pure clay is then mixed with additives such as kaolin, feldspar, quartz, and more to improve its various characteristics, such as plasticity, firing qualities, etc.
Forming the Ceramicware
Once the clay is prepared, the artisans start giving the clay shapes and making their plates. There are several methods that the artisans use to develop the shape. Among them, hand-throwing is one of the most commonly used techniques. This includes using the potter's wheel. The skilled artists throw the clay into the wheel and then spin the wheel. They then use their deft hands to shape the clay into various designs and sizes.
Another traditional technique for making ceramicware is the slip-casting method. In this, the artisans use a plaster mold and pour clay or slip into the cast. The cast or mold then absorbs all moisture or water from the clay, and the excess clay is poured out. It is then left to dry and harden, revealing the design.
A newer technique that the artisans use is press molding. In this, the artists press the clay into the mold using a hydraulic press. This helps create uniformly shaped plates and makes it easier to produce ceramicware mass-produced.
Drying and Firing
Once the plates are shaped, they are then left to dry at room temperature. This may take several days. This is a crucial step as drying the excess moisture helps prevent the forming of any cracks or warping. Once they are completely dried, they are then fired at high temperatures. During the firing process, the clay particles fuse at such high temperatures, forming a hardened ceramic structure. The temperature at which it will be fired depends on the clay and the specific type of property that is desired by the artisans.
Once the plates are fired, they are then glazed. The glaze is typically created using minerals and pigments. It is then applied onto the plates to form a protective layer and enhance their look. Once the glazing is done, they are then decorated using various techniques. The plates are hand-painted with various motifs and patterns, further enhancing the appeal.
Finishing Touches
Once the glazing and decorations are completed, the plates are smoothed out for any rough edges. They are once and finally checked thoroughly for any faults before they are ready to use.
